How Long Does Trade Mark Registration Take in Singapore? #

A straightforward trade mark application in Singapore typically takes about 6-9 months from filing to registration — provided the application contains no deficiency, faces no objection from the Registrar, and is not opposed by a third party.

What Affects the Timeline #

Several factors can extend the process beyond 9 months:

  • Examination objections — if the Registrar raises grounds of refusal (e.g. lack of distinctiveness), you must file a response, which adds rounds of correspondence.
  • Opposition proceedings — after publication, a third party has the right to oppose registration, which can substantially lengthen the timeline.
  • Specification issues — a class containing entirely descriptive terms is more likely to attract an objection and slow examination.

Accelerated Examination: SG Trade Marks Fast (suspended) #

Update (as at 8 July 2026): IPOS has suspended acceptance of new requests under both the SG Trade Marks Fast and SG Patents Fast acceleration programmes from 4 January 2026 while it reviews the programmes. Until IPOS reopens the scheme, this expedited route is not currently available, and a standard application should be planned on the normal ~9-month timeline. We will update this note when IPOS announces the programmes’ resumption. (Source: IPOS Circular, Jan 2026.)

When Protection Begins #

Importantly, a registered trade mark’s protection is backdated to the filing date, not the registration date. This means any infringing use that occurs from the filing date onwards is actionable once the mark is registered.

Timelines are indicative and updated by IPOS; individual cases vary with examination and any opposition. See the IPOS website for current service commitments.
